Possible Prostatitis Treatments

Thanks to modern medicine prostatitis treatment is available for any issue related to inflammation of the prostate. These issues can range from acute bacterial infections to more severe chronic pain syndromes. By definition, prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland and is usually a bacterial infection of the prostate. Symptoms associated with prostatitis are typically described as being a chronic pain and discomfort. Other symptoms also involve painful urination or in some case a reduced urine stream. Some STD's are know to cause episodes of prostatis.
Those suffering from acute or chronic prostatitis  often suffer from fever, chills, low back and abdominal pain, painful ejaculation and bowel movements. Treatments options usually start with treating the bacterial infection, this includes the prescription of antibiotics like Cipro and Levaquin. Both are quinolone antibiotics that are capable of killing most of the bacteria groups that can cause prostatitis. Prostatitis treatment also involves the patient's general health and well being. A patients diet and other behaviors may need to be changed to foster the health of the prostate. Usually the antibiotic treatments with Cipro and Levaquin last about 6 weeks in order to guard against recurring infections. In extreme cases admission to a hospital along with IV antibiotics is necessary. If chronic prostate pain persists, and treatment hasn't reduced the symptoms, there may be a more serious cause. It may be necessary to run diagnostic tests to rule out prostate cancer. Men have a 1 in 10 chance getting prostate cancer.
To gain relief from symptoms, it may be necessary for the patient to monitor their urinary habits. Urinating frequently will reduce the pressure that causes painful urination. Warm baths may also provide relief for those suffering from prostatitis because it provides relief to the perineal and lower back muscles that can become sore due to an inflamed prostate. During the course of the treatment alcohol and caffeine need to be avoided, as do citrus fruits and spicy foods. These are known to irritate the bladder. For patients who suffer chronic prostatitis, these foods should be almost completely left out. Increased water intake encourages urination, helping the body to expel the offending bacteria. When considering prostatitis treatments, a patient's whole health history should be know in order to target the cause.
